Dixon: A Historic Town Filled With Fruit Markets, Fairs & More

Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Dixon so special.

Dixon is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Dixon has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Did you know that Dixon was originally named "Dicksonville" after Thomas Dickson, who donated 10 acres of land for the depot? After a shipment was mistakenly addressed to “Dixon,” the name was shortened in 1874 when the town was officially incorporated.
  • If you're a fan of fresh produce, you'll love the Dixon Farmers Market, which runs every Saturday from May through September. You can find everything from fruits and vegetables to artisanal cheeses and homemade baked goods.
  • If you're interested in history, be sure to visit the Dixon Historical Society Museum. It features exhibits on local agriculture, transportation and famous Dixonites.
  • For outdoor enthusiasts, Dixon has several parks and nature areas to explore, including Hall Memorial Park, Northwest Park and Patwin Park. You can bike, swim, BBQ, play sports, or just enjoy a picnic with friends and family.
  • The Dixon May Fair is one of the oldest fairs in California, dating back 146 years. Held annually in May, it features carnival rides, live music, livestock exhibits and much more.
  • If you're looking for a unique shopping experience, head to the Pedrick Produce. This family-owned business has been selling fresh fruits and vegetables for over 30 years and is a local favorite for its friendly service and wide selection of produce.
  • Dixon is located in Solano County, which is home to over 20 wineries and vineyards. Take a tour of the Suisun Valley wine country, located just a short drive from Dixon, and sample some award-winning wines.
  • The World Record Corn Maze at Cool Patch Pumpkins is a popular attraction during the fall season. This family-friendly maze features offers a fun challenge for visitors of all ages.
  • Dixon is known for its rich agricultural heritage and is a major producer of walnuts, almonds and other crops. Take a scenic drive along the country roads and visit some of the local farms and orchards, such as Dixon Fruit Market, the oldest fruit market on I-80.
  • The Dixon Unified School District has a strong commitment to sustainability and has implemented a number of green initiatives, including solar panels and energy-efficient buildings. Take a tour of some of the district's schools and learn about their environmental efforts.
  • If you're a fan of outdoor festivals, don't miss the Dixon Scottish Games & Gathering. Held annually in September, this event features traditional Scottish athletics, music, dancing and more.
  • The Dixon Fire Department participates in innovative programs, including the Dixon Community Connect program, the Every 15 Minutes program and Santa Run. Learn about the department's efforts to promote health and safety in the community.
  • Dixon is located just a short drive from several major attractions, including the Sacramento Zoo, the Jelly Belly Factory and the Travis Air Force Base Museum. Take a day trip and explore all that the region has to offer.
