Gusty Winds, Rain May Delay Wednesday Commute: NWS

BAY AREA, CA — Widespread rain and gusty winds will move into the San Francisco Bay Area Wednesday before ending Thursday, National Weather Service officials said Monday. Starting at about noon Wednesday, rain will spread from the northwest coast of Sonoma County southward.

Gusty southerly winds will precede the rain, weather officials said. The rain could mean slick roads for commuters especially during the first hour of rain. More than a quarter of an inch of rain per hour could fall in some areas, which could lead to ponding on roads.

Up to two inches of rain is possible in the North Bay mountains, while in the valleys one-half to one inch of rain is expected. Around San Francisco and the nearby vicinity one-third to two-thirds of an inch is expected.
In the South Bay and Peninsula one-tenth to one-third of an inch will fall in urban areas while one-half to an inch of rain will fall on most of the coastal ranges.

Across the higher elevations of the Bay Area, winds of 20 to 30 mph are possible with gusts up to 50 mph.
In urban locations, winds of 15 to 25 mph are forecast with gusts up to 35 mph.
