PHOTO GALLERY: Dublin Swim Center Joins World's Largest Swimming Lesson

Swimmers in Dublin were among thousands from across the country who attempted to break the Guinness Book of World Records record for World's Largest Swimming Lesson.

Swimmers at two Dublin pools on Tuesday kicked, splashed and stroked along with thousands of others worldwide trying to  set a Guinness World Record for the world's largest swimming lesson.

The event was intended to be a fun way to spread the word that swimming lessons help save lives.

About 20 swimmers participated at the  and were awarded World Record certificates in a short ceremony afterward.

Not far across town, another record-setting effort took place at 's Dublin location on Sierra Court. They had 39 swimmers participate, according to Jennifer Lee of the Swim Academy, which teaches swimming in Dublin, Livermore and in the Fremont area.

At the Dublin Swim Center, one little girl balked at getting in, but with Mom promising her a new Barbie, she overcame her fear and joined her class.

Organizers said that drowning is the second leading cause of unintended, injury-related death for children ages one through 14.

"It's so important to draw attention to this issue, particularly at the beginning of the summer season," said Matt Alberti, CEO of American Swim Academy in a statement. "The World's Largest Swimming Lesson is a perfect way to bring the message to life for kids and parents."
