Echo Park Traffic Disrupted Tuesday After Water Main Break

The break near Alvarado Street and Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park flooded the street and several businesses on Alvarado south of Sunset Boulevard.

Update: According to the LADWP, the water main was back in service by 6 p.m.

The Eastsider LA reported early Tuesday evening that a big hole in the southbound lanes of Alvarado Street remained to be filled.

Earlier: A water main break early Tuesday morning in Echo Park has left streets and businesses wet and muddied.

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and other utilities were arriving just before 9 a.m. to prepare to dig up the west side of Alvarado Street south of Sunset Boulevard.

According to workers, the southbound lanes of Alvarado would close for 6 to 8 hours. 

Businesses along the stretch, including family-owned golf supply wholesaler Don Martin and Co., were without water.

And, some of them, like Bruce Merda of Don Martin, had to asses the damage that the creeping water had done. 

Further down the block at Pizza Buona and Architectural Salvage (the former La Popular furniture store), merchandise remained dry. 

No official word yet on the cause of the break, but we'll keep you posted.
