Free Echo Park Program To Help Families Through LAUSD Shutdown
A number of county and city programs are being activated to help families with childcare, homework help and meals during the LAUSD strike.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Families struggling to find childcare this week during the massive 3-day LAUSD strike shutting down school for more than 420,000 students can turn to the Los Angeles County and city parks programs for some free options including at Echo Park.
Many Los Angeles families were caught off guard by the strike, which was officially announced Monday. For children to take advantage of many of the free educational events at the LA Zoo and The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County in Exposition Park and La Brea Tar Pits, a guardian needs to attend with the children - that has made the opportunities inaccessible to many working families. Tuesday's torrential downpours, which are expected to continue Wednesday, further make it hard for families to find free outdoor activities.
To meet the needs of working families, the county Department of Parks and Recreation will extend the hours of its Every Body Plays program at more than a dozen locations, operating from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. The sites will also offer grab- and-go breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

"Parks have always been safe havens for children to play and thrive when schools are closed. Creating a stress-free place for children to play underscores the vital role parks and our caring staff have in promoting positive youth development," Norma Edith García-Gonzalez, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, said in a statement.
The Every Body Plays program is a free, drop-in service for kids age 7 to 17, and features activities including arts and crafts, games and sports.
