City Council Approves Garbage Processing Contract

The 12-year agreement is expected to reduce El Cerrito residents' costs by 10 percent

The El Cerrito City Council has approved a new 12-year contract for garbage disposal and processing that's expected to save residents some money.

The agreement with Republic Services Inc. was approved Tuesday night, according to a story in the Contra Costa Times.

The agreement takes effect Jan. 1. City officials say the contract should reduce costs and save residents about 10 percent on their monthly garbage bills.

The council also formally approved the first reading of the new plastic bag ban and food ware prohibition ordinances that were passed in August.

Those ordinances also take effect Jan. 1 with full enforcement on July 1.

The plastic bag ban has been approved by a number of East Bay cities, leading some proponents to urge the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors to approve a county-wide prohibition.
