About 50 members of the <a href="http://www.unitedteachersofrichmond.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">United Teachers of Richmond</a> – the union representing teachers in West Contra Costa County – staged an election rally in El Cerrito this past week. Carrying signs in support of measures and candidates the union has endorsed, union members gathered at 4 p.m. Monday at Cutting Boulevard and San Pablo Avenue. State Senator Loni Hancock spoke briefly in support. She wore a "No on 32" sticker. Critics say state Proposition 32, a measure on the November 6 ballot that pledges to eliminate or at least sharply reduce the influence of special interests in politics, call it a disguised attempt by corporate conservative interests to stop political contributions from unions while creating loopholes that would allow corporate donations to continue.
