The Week Ahead: Recycled Bags, Senior Housing, Back-To-School Night

Some of the things coming up this week in the El Cerrito and Kensington areas


On Tuesday evening, the El Cerrito City Council will hold its regularly scheduled meeting.

On the agenda is the formal adoption of the single-use bag and the food ware ordinances.

The council will also consider a proposal to accept an $856,000 FEMA grant and then using matching funds and other monies to purchase a 2014 Spartan fire truck with a 103-foot aerial ladder.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 10890 San Pablo Ave.

Also on Tuesday evening, the academic subcommittee of the West Contra Costa Unified School District will meet, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at Helms Middle School, 2500 Road 20 in San Pablo.

On Wednesday afternoon, El Cerrito's Committee on Aging will hold its monthly meeting. The session begins at 3 p.m. at City Hall, 10890 San Pablo Ave.

On Wednesday evening, the El Cerrito Planning Commission will hold its regularly scheduled meeting.

On the agenda is a study session to discuss on the draft Environmental Impact Report on the proposed 62-unit Eden senior housing complex next to City Hall.

The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall, 10890 San Pablo Ave.

On Thursday morning, a sing-a-long for children will be held at the El Cerrito Library, 6510 Stockton Ave. Miss Erica and her guitar will provide the classic kids' songs. The event is from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

On Thursday afternoon, the El Cerrito Historical Society will host its monthly open hours from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Dorothy and Sundar Shadi Historical Room at City Hall, 10890 San Pablo Ave.

On Thursday evening, back-to-school nights will be held at middle schools in the West Contra Costa Unified School District.

On Saturday evening, a ball inspired by Jane Austen's final and unfinished novel, "Sandition," will be held at the Arlington Community Church, 52 Arlington Ave., in Kensington. The event is from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
