90-Year-Old Senior Center Volunteer Not Slowing Down

David Huleva has been volunteering at the Senior Center of Elk Grove for 30 years, and currently serves lunch there five days a week.

When 90-year-old David Huleva comes to the Senior Center of Elk Grove, it isn't to eat lunch or get help from a support group.

He's there to volunteer.

Huleva has been donating his time to the senior center since it opened in 1983, and currently comes to the Sharkey Avenue location five days a week. He rides his bicycle a half-mile to the center and helps the Meals on Wheels by Asian Community Center serve a hot lunch to fellow seniors, many of whom are younger than himself.

"What's kept me coming back is being able to visit with these people, getting to know people, giving back," he said.

Huleva, who earned an honorable mention at last year's Elk Grove Mayor's Volunteer Awards, retired from the now-shuttered Sacramento Army Depot after working there for 30 years.
