April 27 Walk Will Benefit Special-Needs Jessie Baker Students

The school is raising money for playground improvements.

Special-needs students in Elk Grove could soon have better play equipment at school thanks to an upcoming fundraiser walk.

Jessie Baker School will host its second-annual Walk in Our Shoes later this month, a mile-and-a-half stroll around the community soundtracked by the Elk Grove High School drumline.

Jessie Baker paraeducator Melissa Bender said it will send a good message to the students to have them walking around the community with fellow residents.

"They belong in our community as much as anybody else," Bender said.

The money from the walk will go toward replacing the shredded bark in the 8-year-old and younger students' playground–which gets messy in the winter–with cork. Bender said school officials are also hoping the buy a cover for the playground to keep the plastic play equipment cool.
