Does a Local Coach's Arrest for Sex With a Minor Change the Way You Feel About Youth Sports?
Should soccer moms and dads be concerned about Arthur Temblador's arrest?

It's a scenario that has been repeated many times in cities across the country, and this week it came to Elk Grove: a youth sports coach arrested for allegedly having sex with an underage girl.
In this case, of the Elk Grove Everton Football Club, and the girl a 16-year-old who may or may not have been a player on one of the club's soccer teams.
Some readers of various media sitesβincluding this oneβhave suggested the incident shows that soccer clubs need to better screen their coaches. But would a background check have made a difference in this case? Temblador, who has been put on unpaid leave while the case is investigated, is not listed in the state database of sex offenders. And it's hard to imagine what kind of background check would suss out all the psychological, societal, cultural and hormonal factors that can cause someone in a position of responsibility to make this kind of decision.
