The Wake-Up Call: Lifeguard Training, History Lessons

Get ready to crank up the air conditioning, Elk Grove. Today is supposed to be a scorcher (at least, compared to the timid spring days we've seen recently). If your thoughts, like ours, are beginning to turn to swimming, you might want to check out the Cosumnes Community Services District's summer recreational swim schedule. And see below for a program that's training some young 'uns to keep us all safe while we're in the water.
In the Patch:
Living history. Elk Grove's Historic Preservation Committee holds its monthly meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, 8400 Laguna Palms Way. Members of the public are invited to attend.

Young lifesavers. The Cosumnes Community Services District is still accepting registrations for its junior lifeguard program, which starts June 20. Eleven- and twelve-year-olds can learn water rescue skills and become certified as CSD Junior Lifeguards at the end of the course. Want to join? You must be able to swim freestyle for 100 yards and tread water for one minute.

One in four state legislators nationwide never earned a college degree. So says a new report by the Chronicle of Higher Education, highlighted in The New York Times. California, however, has the most formally-educated legislature in the country, with 90 percent of its lawmakers holding bachelor's degrees.
