A History of Halloween: Why All the Ghosts?
It started across the Atlantic, but is now celebrated more on this side of the pond than in Britain.

Why, every year, on Oct. 31, do we encourage our children to dress up as ghosts and vampires and ask strangers for candy?
Believe it or not, it's just another thing the inhabitants of the British Isles can claim credit for, according to this article in the Huffington Post on the history of Halloween.
Halloween began life as an ancient Celtic harvest festival called Samhain; this pagan festival then became linked to a the Roman Catholic holy day now known as All Souls Day, which, like Dia de los Muertos, remembers the departed.
