Encino Star Student With Passion For Math Has 4.61 GPA

ENCINO, CA — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

I have known Luke Jones since August of 2021, but Luke has attended Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino since his Freshman year. Luke's outstanding performance in mathematics is truly impressive. Luke is a highly motivated, intelligent young man that works independently and autonomously, yet can seek support when appropriate. During the time I have gotten to know Luke, he has made a tremendous impact on me with his maturity, leadership skills, confidence, intelligence, diligence, and motivation to succeed. Not only is Luke an extraordinary student, but he is also engaged with his peers and school community. He is well liked by both students and teachers and exhibits an extremely likable and personable persona. Luke is a well-rounded student that has balanced academics, extra-curriculars as well as service within the community. Luke has challenged himself academically by taking a rigorous academic course load of AP and honors courses as well as completing all lower division math courses available to him at the community college level. Luke has maintained an Unweighted GPA of 4.0 and a Weighted GPA of 4.61. During Luke’s sophomore year during the pandemic, Luke lost his mother unexpectedly. His mother was a huge support of Luke’s passion and aptitude for math. Luke turned his grief into motivation and continued to excel academically. Since he had progressed through all Calculus levels offered at Crespi, he desired to continue his passion for mathematics, so he turned to the community college and has completed all lower division math courses accessible to him including Calculus 1, Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus, Statistics, R Programming, and Differential Equations. Additionally, Luke excelled at the Math Madness Division 2A and 2B National Championship and qualified for the AIME II Competition. Luke also serves as the President of the STEM Cohort. In addition to Luke’s strong academic transcript and challenging coursework at the community college level, Luke has earned multiple awards for Academics such as Student of the Year for Gospel of Salvation, Outstanding Scholar Award and President’s Honor Roll. Luke’s involvements in school activities are aligned with his passion for mathematics as he participates in both the Math Club, STEM Cohort, and the Academic Decathlon team. Similarly, his passion for his faith and commitment to service within his church and community demonstrate his resolve to serve and help others. On a personal level, Luke exhibits a maturity far beyond his years. How he conducts himself make him a standout as a classmate that leads by example. It is important for Luke not only to excel in math, but to be engaged in meaningful relationships in school and to serve within the community. Luke volunteers many hours to his church and the surrounding community throughout the school year and summers. All of these characteristics testify to Luke’s strong leadership qualities and dedication. Undoubtedly, Luke is an extraordinary student that demonstrates the commitment and the ability to excel at the university level. I believe that whatever Luke sets his mind to do, he will achieve. Luke is a remarkable young man with a promising future. He is a an extremely hard working and dedicated individual with phenomenal math capabilities as well as a capacity to connect with others and serve the community. Luke is a well-rounded individual that I believe will be an asset at the university level and for these reasons I strongly recommend him.
