ENCINO-TARZANA, CA — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Gabriella Sherman who nominated Ryan of Encino-Tarzana.

How do you know the star local student?

He is my son

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

My son, Ryan, is a 5th grader at Encino Charter Elementary. He was recently elected school president and his campaign centered on a few key principles—one was increasing recognition of teachers. Ryan appreciated that the school took the time to recognize a student each month, but what about teachers? So, he developed a teacher of the month recognition program so students can recognize a fellow teacher for their contributions. He worked with CPK to obtain sponsorship of a gift certificate for them, too. Ryan designed ballots and a process to distribute and collect them over 2 weeks at school. He received 109 nominations and presented his first award on Monday. This has been a great success and is an opportunity to recognize innovation and a culture of gratitude by a young child in our community.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Ryan is ambitious and loves to apply his passion to do good work in his community.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Ryan!
