PHOTOS: Persians Wind up New Year Celebrations at Lake Balboa
The lively and colorful "Sizdeh Bedar Festival" attracts thousands from all over the Southland.
Some 3,000 Persians celebrated the "Sizdeh Bedar Festival” Sunday at Lake Balboa in Encino. Known as the festival of “joy and solidarity,” the lively occasion marked the 13th and last day of "Nowruz," the Persian New Year, symbolizing the return to ordinary, daily life after 12 days of festivities.
In Persian culture, joy and laughter are believed to clean the mind of evil thoughts. Persians from the Valley, Santa Monica, Westwood and as far as Long Beach danced to live music and picniced, while a variety of vendors sold everthing from Persian food to garments and books.
