1. Breaking News: Rescue Underway for Injured Surfer in Humboldt Bay (kymkemp.com) — Emergency crews are responding this morning to an injured surfer in Humboldt Bay near the Eureka city boat ramp and Stinky Beach. Humboldt Bay Fire has deployed rescue swimmers from the foot of A Street across Elk River after callers reported the surfer may have a back injury and can’t reach shore.
   

2. Eureka Police Vow to be On the Hunt for DUI Drivers This Holiday Season, and There'll be a Checkpoint Somewhere in Town This Thursday (lostcoastoutpost.com) — Eureka drivers should expect extra DUI patrols through New Year’s Day and a sobriety checkpoint somewhere in town on Thursday, Dec. 18, from 7 p.m. to midnight. Police urge residents to plan sober rides, avoid driving impaired by alcohol, cannabis, or medications, and call 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver. Funding comes from state and federal traffic safety grants.
   

3. (VIDEO) A Pod of Orcas Visited Humboldt Bay This Morning (lostcoastoutpost.com) — Orcas made a rare close-up appearance in the Eureka Channel of Humboldt Bay, thrilling local birders and boaters this morning. Naturalist Rob Fowler captured video of a family group of five whales cruising between the Wharfinger Building, Woodley Island and Samoa after a pelagic birding trip.
   

4. Local musician releases latest book (times-standard.com) — Eureka readers can now pick up local drummer Michael Curran’s new novel “Looking North” at The Booklegger downtown, alongside shops in Arcata and Garberville. Drawing on decades of gig memories, Curran’s second book in his Humboldt-centered trilogy explores Northern Humboldt’s 1990s music and surf culture from a drummer’s-eye view, and is also available to order online.
   

5. The Humboldt Del Norte Film Commission celebrates region's movie legacy (times-standard.com) — Eureka film fans are invited to the Old Town museum, where you can see screen-used boats from “Bird Box” and “Swiss Army Man,” plus a “Sasquatch Sunset” tree trunk repurposed for a Star Wars display. The piece profiles Film Commissioner Cassandra Hesseltine’s 15-year effort bringing productions, tourism dollars, and local opportunities to Humboldt and Del Norte counties, with tips on how residents can get involved.
