Thursday Essentials: Beach Cleanup, Boomers and Bands
What you should know that's going on in and around your town today.

1. Thursday is Swimmable California Day you can celebrate by participating in a beach cleanup in Huntington Beach, from 3-7 p.m. at Bolsa Chica State Beach, lifeguard tower #20. Everyone who enjoys paddling, surfing, swimming, or just frolicking in the waves should come and do their part to keep their beach and waters clean. There will be hot dogs and s'mores on the beach while they last.
2. Concerts in the Park will continue when Cold Duck performs their unique grooving hits from the '80s from 6-8 p.m. The concert will be at the Fountain Valley Recreation Center & Sports Park at Brookhurst and Heil streets. Attendees should bring picnic blankets and chairs. The event is a fun picnic-style concert for families with their kids. Parking and admission is completely free.
3. Across town, another concert will be held at 6 p.m. as part of the OC Parks Summer Concert Series. Performances by Hunter Hunted and DJ Velvet Touch will delight crowds at Mile Square Park, 16801 Euclid St. For more information, contact Ashley Eckenweiler, (949) 285-9239.

5. A 47-year-old Huntington Beach man was convicted Wednesday of sexually assaulting a 4-year-old relative he was babysitting. Gordon Ray Bodkin was was babysitting the victim to whom he is related when he was interrupted while sexually assaulting the girl Aug. 9, 2011. He is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 30.
