Identity Released of Man Killed by Fremont Police

The Fremont Police Department has released the identity of a man shot and killed by officers late Sunday night.

Police say Dejuan Eaton, 37, of San Jose, was chasing after his estranged wife with a knife and failed to comply with officers' repeated commands to drop the weapon, according to the Fremont Police Department.

The incident occurred after officers responded around 11 p.m. to a home in the 4500 block of Central Avenue where a woman had called to report that her roommate was being attacked, Fremont police Officer Geneva Bosques said.

Officers arriving at the home saw a female victim running out of the front door followed by Eaton, who was naked and wielding a knife, Bosques said.

Eaton continued to chase the victim while brandishing the knife. When he failed to comply with police's repeated commands to drop the weapon, two officers fired at the suspect, hitting him, Bosques said.

Eaton was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Bosques said Monday that both officers involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave, following departmental policy after an officer-involved shooting.

Police did not release those officers' names, but said that one has been in law enforcement for more than 20 years, while the other is a three-year veteran.

The shooting is under investigation by both the Fremont Police Department and Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, police said.
