A woman who was seriously injured when her car was hit by a dump truck on a busy thoroughfare in Fremont Tuesday morning is expected to survive, police said.
At 5:15 a.m. police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a crash on Auto Mall Parkway near Technology Drive.
The empty dump truck was traveling east on Auto Mall Parkway when it crossed the large center median and struck a white two-door Acura CL driving west, police said.
The truck hit the Acura head-on, sending both cars to the shoulder, where the truck landed on its side, Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said.
The woman driving the Acura was transported to a local trauma center for treatment of spinal fractures and lacerations, Sgt. Jeff Swadener said.
She was identified as a 25-year-old San Jose resident, Bosques said.
The man driving the dump truck had a few lacerations but was not transported to a hospital, Swadener said.
The tan 2007 Western Star dump truck he was driving had major axle damage, Bosques said.
Crews were called to the scene to clean up diesel that spilled from the dump truck, Swadener said.
Police are still looking into why the dump truck's driver veered across the grassy median strip, he said.
Maintenance crews arrived shortly before noon to remove a tree that was knocked down in the crash, Bosques said.
The crash blocked traffic on Auto Mall Parkway between Fremont and Grimmer boulevards for hours.
