Bogus Burglary Report Results in Officer Shooting Dog for Safety

Police said three pitbulls charged at officers who were responding to a report of a burglary that turned out to be false.

A dog was shot after a man faked a report of a home burglary in Fremont on Thursday, according to the Fremont Police Department.

Authorities said officers responded to Trout Court in the Mission San Jose district at approximately 2:15 p.m. after the man reported that two unknown minors came out of his neighbor’s home carrying large bags.

When police approached the home, three pitbulls “forced open the gate and charged the officers,” according to a Fremont police statement.

Police said the officers retreated but an officer “fired two shots to protect himself and others in the area” and two dogs fled the area, while one went into the backyard. At least one dog was struck by the gun fire but no people were injured.

Fremont Police Det. Bill Veteran said officers searched for the two dogs, one of which was the pitbull struck by gunfire, for approximately five hours but that the pair of pitbulls remain at large.

Authorities said the man who reported the burglary became uncooperative but then admitted to making up the report during a second interview and had been posting photographs from the scene on his Facebook.

The man, identified as Kyle Huynh, 19, of Fremont, was arrested on suspicion of making a false 911 call and a false police report. He booked into Fremont Jail where he is being held on a $10,000 bail and is scheduled for an arraignment on Sept. 4.
