A 33-year-old man was apprehended after attempting to flee from police in a stolen delivery truck that contained a stored firearm.

FREMONT, CA — A Fremont man was arrested in the city on Jan. 3 on suspicion of stealing a delivery truck that contained a stored firearm after leading police on a vehicle chase, officials said Thursday.
Navroop Sandhu, 33, has been charged with three felony counts following his arrest, according to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
At 1:30 p.m. on Jan 3, Fremont police got a call from an outside agency about the stolen truck. During the theft, there were also unconfirmed accounts of gunfire, according to the Fremont Police Department.

Police attempted to pull the driver over but the suspect kept driving, prompting a vehicle pursuit. The chase ended shortly after officers employed a "pursuit intervention technique," halting the vehicle at the end of Gurdwara Road.

Sandhu reportedly remained inside the truck, with the firearm still accessible. Officers used de-escalation strategies to negotiate Sandhu's surrender, but police said he refused to comply. Less-lethal measures were then deployed, allowing officers to safely take Sandhu into custody. He sustained minor injuries during the arrest.
The firearm was recovered "undisturbed" inside the vehicle, and the reports of gunfire during the theft were later determined to be unsubstantiated.
Sandhu's three felony charges include: evading a peace officer against traffic (Vehicle Code 2800.4), unlawful taking or driving of a vehicle (Penal Code 10851(a)), and possession of a stolen vehicle (Penal Code 496D(a)).
