Fremont to Hire Four More Police Officers

The cost of the new sworn officers will be $640,000 each year, according to media reports.

Fremont will soon be hiring more police officers as a result of a vote made by four city councilmembers Tuesday night.

City staff can now hire four more police officers for the , which will increase the number of sworn officers in Fremont to 185, according to The Fremont Argus.

The Argus reports that the hiring of the new officers will come at the cost of $640,000 per year.

The new officers will join the force in about a year, after six months in the police academy and a 22-week field-training program, Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said.

Crime is down, overall, in Fremont, a city of 217,00 people. But home and commercial burglaries – as in many Bay Area cities – are up. About 1,200 burglaries were reported in Fremont in 2011, and the city is averaging about 106 per month in 2012, for a total of 744 through the end of July.
