Homeless Encampment Fire Threatens 2 Apartment Complexes

Firefighters aggressively battled the flames, keeping the area burned to a quarter acre.

FREMONT, CA — Fremont fireighters put out a fire at a homeless encampment that threatened two apartment complexes, according to the fire department.

The fire was at an encampment at the corner of Spruce Terrace and Foxtail Terrace.

The fire department reports that it aggressively fought the fire, limiting its spread to 1/4 of an acre. Baywood Villas and Meadowbrook Apartments were on the other side of the fence from the fire, and flames were approaching carports when firefighters arrived.

There were no reports of injuries.

Last Thursday, Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered state agencies to start removing homeless encampments on state land. The executive order also provides guidance for cities and counties to do the same.

While the City of Fremont, other East Bay cities and Alameda County are not legally bound to remove encampments, pressure is mounting to remove them as a threat to the health and safety of residents in nearby homes and apartments.
