The fire started when the lit cigarette came in contact with a vodka spill on his shirt.

A man accidentally set himself on fire early Wednesday morning after falling asleep on a bench, police said.

A friend called Fremont police at about 3:30 a.m. to report the incident. It occurred in the area of Walnut Avenue near Paseo Padre Parkway.

Officers responded to the area and found the man, who had just removed his burning clothing.

Police said the fire started after the lit cigarette came in contact with vodka that the man had earlier spilled on his shirt.

The man had visible burns and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
