Storms Dump Rain On The East Bay, With More Wet Weather Ahead

Another very rainy day is in store Wednesday before a change in the weather on tap for the holidays. Here are the latest forecasts.

FREMONT, CA — Many East Bay communities have been subject to a soaking this week as a series of wet weather systems rack up rain totals across the region.

Maps from the National Weather Service showed more than 2 inches of rain observed in Fremont over 24 hours by 3 p.m. Tuesday, with more than an inch recorded over the same period around Berkeley and Newark.

Wednesday is poised to boost the numbers even higher before things begin to taper off Thursday, according to the latest forecasts. The next storm prompted the National Weather Service to issue a coastal flood advisory and share a hydrologic outlook for rising streams.

Wet and windy weather delayed or canceled flights on consecutive days at Bay Area airports, and Wednesday could bring headaches of its own.

"At this time, rainfall totals with this next storm are anywhere from 2 - 2.5 inches in the higher elevations, to 1 - 1.25 inches generally in lower elevations," NWS Bay Area forecasters wrote in a briefing Tuesday afternoon. "At the highest peaks such as in the Santa Lucias, amounts up to 3 inches may be seen."

Calmer days are on the horizon for the holidays, shifting to lighter showers Thursday ahead of a dry trend that forecasters believe will stay in place through Christmas. The National Weather Service is tracking early murmurs of more rain in the cards for the end of the year but said long-term models are still in disagreement over exactly how things will shake out.
