Tsunami Risk In Fremont: See Map, Look Up Your Address

FREMONT, CA — Fremont was thrown into upheaval Thursday morning when a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California, 45 miles southwest of Eureka.

The 10:44 a.m. quake triggered a tsunami warning from the National Weather Service that stretched from Oregon down the California coastline to the edge of Monterey Bay, and included San Francisco Bay. Fremont's coastline was included in the warning.

The tsunami warning was canceled just before noon, but by then, residents were grabbing go-bags and hitting the road in search of safety.

Is your home or workplace in a Tsunami Hazard Area designated by the California Department of Conservation? According to the agency, the maps "are based on the State of California 2009 Tsunami Inundation Maps for Emergency Planning and enhanced high-resolution, 975-year return period probabilistic tsunami inundation model results. The boundaries of tsunami hazard areas are defined by the California Geological Survey."

This tool was overwhelmed during Thursday's warning, so it's wise to check it immediately so that you will know for the future.

During Thursday's tsunami warning, the Fremont Police Department sent an evacuation alert for areas of Fremont west of I-880.
