FREMONT

Fremont Downtown Community Plan Approved

Councilmembers unanimously voted Tuesday to adopt the city’s Downtown Community Plan, and rezone 110 acres of land that is mostly occupied by office and commercial buildings near City Chambers. The council’s move is part of the first steps in a years-long process to convert central downtown into a place where people can work, live and play, according to city leaders. New AT&T Store Opens at Fremont Hub

A ribbon cutting was held Thursday morning in celebration of the recent opening of an AT&T store at the Fremont Hub.  City leaders attended and Fremont Mayor Gus Morrison thanked the company for its innovation and investment in the city. See more here.  

A man was arrested after police say he tried to kidnap three young men in Fremont then led police on a car chase into Union City. Police said just after 10:05 p.m. Tuesday, two men flagged down police officers to report that a man was yelling at them and another man to get into the pick-up truck he was driving as they were walking along Paseo Padre Parkway near the Archstone Fremont Center Apartments. Police spotted the suspect, who then fled onto Mission Boulevard toward Union City on the wrong side off the road. He was eventually apprehended and arrested on suspicion of attempted kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, felony evasion, driving on the wrong side of the road while in pursuit and resisting arrest with injury to an officer. NEWARK

Newark Man Shot to Death by Houston Police

A Newark man was fatally shot by police in Houston after a family dispute spiraled out of control, authorities said. Houston police responded around 11:45 p.m. last Thursday to a report of the family disturbance and responding officers found the 26-year-old man, who was armed with a knife, fighting with family members. Police said officers shot the man after he refused to comply to their demands and walked toward them “in a threatening manner.” Read the full report here.

Newark Native Plays Key Role in Coast Guard Mission

Joseph Gonzales, a petty officer 1st class with the Coast Guard, is a Newark native who is currently taking part in the Coast Guard’s Operation Arctic Shield Mission. Gonzales is currently a boatswain’s mate for the Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf, which deployed mid-August. Read more about his role in the mission by clicking here.

UNION CITY

Two Men to Stand Trial in Beating, Burning Death of Union City Woman

Two men have been ordered to stand trial for the beating death of a 21-year-old Union City woman whose body was dumped near a freeway and set on fire. The two men are charged with murder with a special circumstance of committing a murder during a kidnapping. Witnesses testified during preliminary hearings this week that one of the men threatened the woman with a torch before she was killed. A police officer told the court that the woman died from blunt force trauma to her head and that her body was burned after she was dead. The full report can be found here.

Report Says Tri-Cities Will Save Millions in Police Dispatch Consolidation

Consultants recently determined Fremont, Newark and Union City could save millions of dollars if they move forward with a joint police dispatch service, according to media reports, but Newark will not be taking part. The Argus Reports that the average 10-year savings for a consolidated police dispatch service would average $4 million for Union City. More details can be found here.

As Logan High’s football team continues its first year breaking out from the Mission Valley Athletic League, running back Warren Miles Long recalled his first breakout game with Patch this week.
