These stories trace roots from east of Fresno’s Sierra foothills to Blackstone and Shaw, Swede Fest, Havana Café, ArtHop, and the San Joaquin River’s ongoing cleanup.
   

2. Flooding damages multiple businesses at Nantucket Shopping Square in Fresno (yourcentralvalley.com) — Multiple small businesses at Fresno’s Nantucket Shopping Square are facing major damage after heavy rain flooded the strip center, collapsing ceilings and soaking interiors. Barbershop, restaurant, tea house, and church tenants say they’d warned about roof and drain problems for months and are now scrambling to clean up, reopen, and figure out who will cover their losses.
   

3. Mother of Fresno Man Killed During Parole Check Sues State and Officer (kmjnow.com) — A Fresno mother has filed a lawsuit against the state of California and a parole officer after her 26-year-old son, Jeremy Raul Sanchez, was fatally shot during a parole check at a central Fresno home on Christmas Eve. Investigators say a confrontation turned physical, while the family insists Sanchez was unarmed and shot in the back, and officials have not yet commented.
   

4. Free rural business accelerator launches in Central Valley 2026 (thebusinessjournal.com) — A new free Rural Ignite Business Accelerator from Fresno Pacific University’s Center for Community Transformation will start in January 2026, offering training for rural entrepreneurs across the Valley. Sessions begin Jan. 14 in Reedley, with later dates in Selma and online, and cover finance, culinary ventures, sales, marketing, and nonprofit skills, all accessible through the CCT Fresno website.
