Rubel Castle Moves Closer to National Landmark Recognition

The Glendora landmark needs approval from the National Park Service.

Rubel Castle, the Glendora landmark built from stone and recycled products, moved closer to National Landmark status, receiving approval from the California Historic Resources Commission earlier this month, according to the Glendora Historical Society.

The bid must now be accepted by the National Park Service for it to be given National Landmark designation.

The whimsical castle full of historical odds and ends in a 2 ½-acre citrus orchard was completed in 1986 by Michael Rubel, who passed away in 2007.

“The castle is a prime example of folk art,” Glendora Historical Society docent John Lundstrom told Patch in June. “Just the historical connection to California’s great citrus past would be enough to qualify the castle and the farm for landmark status.”
