Sandburg Students Send Blankets For Children in Need

When taking on a service-learning project, seventh grade AVID students at Sandburg Middle School thought of blankets, lots of them.

In May, the students took part in Project Linus, which provides new, handmade blankets to seriously ill, traumatized children. Inspired by the Peanuts character whose blanket never leaves his side, the project realizes the comfort and calming effect blankets can have on children.

Utilizing the PARC (Planning, Action, Reflection, and Celebration) model, the class designed the service-learning project. The PARC model ensures the success of any service activity because it involves students in every step of the process, from planning to celebration.  The students raised funds, saved coupons to purchase the materials for the ten blankets, made the “no-sew” fleece blankets, and delivered the blankets to a local Project Linus chapter.
