1. Heritage Ridge Affordable Housing Development Breaks Ground in Goleta (independent.com) — A long-planned 104-unit affordable housing complex, Heritage Ridge, has officially broken ground in Goleta and is being billed as the largest affordable housing project in the city’s history. Located near Los Carneros Road and Camino Vista, it will include units for seniors, homeless residents, and veterans, plus a public park honoring Chumash culture. Completion is expected in about 18 months.
   

2. Man Rescued from Ravine Below Cold Spring Bridge After Vehicle Incident on Highway 154 (independent.com) — Emergency crews rescued a 69-year-old man who tumbled nearly 200 feet below Cold Spring Bridge after his car rolled into a ditch off Highway 154, then carried him out with a rope system to an ambulance. Buried in the “Most Read” list is a key local note: the Heritage Ridge affordable housing development has just broken ground in Goleta, signaling major new homes on the way.
   

3. Mathilda Park Construction to Begin in January in Western Goleta (noozhawk.com) — Construction to upgrade Mathilda Park in western Goleta will start in early to mid-January and run through spring, bringing new playground equipment, drought-tolerant landscaping, and better ADA access. Work will occur weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., so nearby residents should expect some temporary noise and disruptions while the city improves this hilltop neighborhood park.
   

4. Gauchos Steamroll Portland 79-61 in Final Game of 2025 (independent.com) — UC Santa Barbara’s men’s basketball team closed 2025 with a dominant 79-61 home win over the University of Portland, highlighted by strong defense and hot shooting. Portland head coach Shantay Legans, who grew up in Goleta and attended Dos Pueblos High, returned to face the Gauchos as they improved to 10-4 and stayed unbeaten in Big West play.
   

5. Sheriff Substation to Open at Rosewood Miramar Hotel in Montecito (noozhawk.com) — A new sheriff’s substation is set to open next month at the Rosewood Miramar Beach Hotel in Montecito, aiming to improve response times and visibility for deputies. County officials say the Highway 101–adjacent office will function like existing substations in Old Town Goleta and Camino Real Marketplace, offering deputies workspace and parking while keeping them close to the communities they serve.
