• Wildfire Evacuation Route Project For Hwy 49 (knco.com) — A major Highway 49 wildfire evacuation-route upgrade between Alta Sierra and Lake of the Pines is open for public comment, with documents available at the Grass Valley library. Residents can review the draft environmental report online or locally and speak directly with Caltrans officials at a January 7 meeting at the Rood Center. Construction could begin as early as fall 2027 and last three years.
   

• More than 200 Animals Rescued Following Animal Welfare Check (crimevoice.com) — More than 200 neglected animals were seized from a Meyer Ravine Road property in Grass Valley after a welfare check uncovered dead and sick livestock and pets. Nevada County Sheriff’s deputies, HEART volunteers, and animal control set up emergency shelters and continue caring for the surviving animals. Many will eventually be available for adoption or foster once medically cleared.
   

• NID receives $615,000 CAL FIRE grant to protect critical water infrastructure from wildfire (yubanet.com) — Grass Valley’s water security is getting a boost as NID uses a $615,000 CAL FIRE grant to reduce wildfire risk along the South Yuba Canal, the sole water conveyance for Grass Valley and nearby communities. Crews will thin trees, create shaded fuel breaks, and protect the wooden flume that feeds local treatment plants, irrigation customers, and critical services like the Grass Valley Airport.
