Here are the top 4 stories today in Healdsburg:
- The plaza was a party yesterday for the Healdsburg Jazz Festival's big Juneteenth event, which kicked off two weeks of jazz shows here in town. Shop Local Healdsburg uploaded some great footage of the afternoon drumming workshop in the gazebo and a band called MJ's Brass Boppers playing a stage at the west end of the plaza. (They honestly sound a lot better than the bands I saw on CNN last night!) Here's a recap of the event from the Press Democrat: "The plaza celebration started later in the afternoon and featured music, poetry and activities for kids and families. The event opened with a welcome and Juneteenth libations to honor the ancestors, followed by performances from multiple artists such as the Robin Hodge Williams Gospel Choir, Martin Luther the Real McCoy, the Charles McPherson Quintet and MJs Brass Boppers. The celebrations continued at Elephant in the Room in Healdsburg with a jazz festival performance from the Howard Wiley Quartet. Healdsburg City Council member Ron Edwards said it was a great turnout for both the jazz festival and the city’s Juneteenth Celebration. 'What’s nice is that we’re able to have events like the Juneteenth Celebration to really celebrate lots of different diversity,' he said. 'It’s nice that people can come with their families, enjoy the music and see members of their community.'" (Shop Local Healdsburg via Instagram & Press Democrat; paywall)
- A new organic burger joint called Iggy's Burger just opened on the plaza. It's located inside the same storefront as Angela's Ice Cream, a larger Sonoma County chain that opened here just a couple of weeks ago. Iggy's owners posted on their Instagram over the weekend: "The wait is finally over. Iggy's Organic Burger is now open at 109 Plaza Street in Healdsburg! 🌱🍔 Join us as we kick off our soft opening week with a bang. To celebrate this milestone, we're giving away the first 100 smash burgers for FREE! 🎁 That's right, folks. No strings attached. Starting at 5pm until we run out!" Caroline from Shop Local Healdsburg got the message and stopped by on Father's Day. She posted some footage to social media of her "delicious" burger and the menu, which includes the two burgers they're debuting with: The Iggy for $8 and The Biggy for $12. Opening hours at Iggy's will be spotty this week while the restaurant "fine-tunes" its offerings, the owners say, so check their Instagram stories for daily updates. (Image courtesy of Shop Local Healdsburg) - There's also a fancy home-goods store called Heirloom Haus opening next month just north of Big John's on Healdsburg Avenue, across the street from World Gym. The store, located inside the old building that used to house Chinese restaurant CK House, will only open its doors one weekend per month for "release days," the owners say — starting this July 8 and 9 from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. Here's how it works, according to their announcement: "Our release days are filled with imported & heirloom inventory on a first come, first serve basis. Drops take place as inventory permits, no two drops are the same as our items are completely unique. Our drops are announced to our community via Instagram, email, text message, and our website. We are only open to the public when drops occur." And here's what kind of inventory you can expect: "Our store will include one of a kind pieces you won't be able to find in Sonoma County. We are sourcing artisan French bread boards, Spanish dough bowls, pottery from Turkey, Morocco & France, Turkish rugs & pillows, and much more. All of our foraged pieces are hand picked by us and are one of a kind. We will also be selling French linens, locally sourced goods, furniture, & home fragrances." - East Coast rapper Ja Rule — famous for a series of pop hits in the early 2000s, including a couple of classics with J.Lo — is reportedly launching his very own expensive Healdsburg wine label called Rose Vine Cellars, in collaboration with well-known local winemakers. The wine is made from 60-year-old vines in the Alexander Valley and aged for two years, according to wine industry mag The Drinks. Here's the lowdown: "Ja Rule has teamed up with Ross Reedy, director of winemaking at Truett Hurst winery and VML Wines, and wine marketing company Wines That Rock to launch his Rose Vine Cellars label. To kickstart his wine business, the rapper has released two high-end Alexander Valley expressions; Red Rose Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 (US$100) and an Autographed Limited Edition bottle dipped in red wax (US$150), both of which are offered as a set for US$250. 'This launch is near and dear to my heart; one of my favourite things to do after a long day is pour myself a nice glass of wine,' said Ja Rule." The rapper's new wine label is part of a larger "Wines That Rock" project, The Drinks reports. "Designed to bridge the gap between the arts and wine, the company has launched wines including Fifty Shades of Grey Wine, The Bachelor Wine, Cirque du Soleil and Downton Abbey Wine collections." They've also made wines for Elvis, KISS, the Rolling Stones, the Police and more. (The Drinks Business & Wines That Rock)
