Discovered Sept. 9 in Healdsburg. (Melinda Pressler)

HEALDSBURG, CA — Patcher reader Melinda Pressler almost thought this was a champion champignon — truffle-like mushroom in French — but she did some digging (pun intended) and found out it was most likely a tree fungus.

"Not an edible morsel but marvelous, nonetheless," Melinda wrote in an email to Patch.

She spotted the fungus Sept. 9 while on a walk with her family dog in Healdsburg.
