  1. Little Saint, the big food and music space that opened inside the old SHED building on North Street last year, is reportedly adding a new element next month: A "vegan fine dining" restaurant called Second Story with a 10-12 course tasting menu. Naturally, it will be located on the building's second story, the San Francisco Chronicle reports — above the casual vegan cafe on the the ground floor. (Not sure how exactly this relates to the upstairs lounge where Little Saint has been hosting concerts; I've reached out to clarify.) More from the Chronicle: "When SingleThread founders Kyle and Katina Connaughton suddenly ended their involvement with Healdsburg restaurant Little Saint last year, the future of the 10,000-square-foot meatless marketplace was uncertain. But just six months later, Little Saint is poised for a dramatic comeback. The owners recruited an all-star chef from Copenhagen’s now-closed Noma — once widely considered the best restaurant in the world — to launch an ambitious fine-dining restaurant with an all-vegan tasting menu in July. ... Upstairs, dishes presented at the new restaurant’s light-filled, greenhouse-inspired space are notably fancier. The 10- to 12-course meal may start with small bites like a mushroom and zucchini skewer with pasilla chile and tamarind, or a savory twist on a traditional Danish Aebleskiver pancake served with cooked greens, a carrot-yeast glaze and fennel flowers. Little Saint co-owner Laurie Ubben said that a fine-dining restaurant on the second floor — where the kitchen is — was always part of 'the original spitball' when Little Saint was conceived." And the restaurant's famous new chef, Stu Stalker, says: “We don’t want to be compared to other vegan restaurants. We want to be compared to other high-quality restaurants in the area.” (San Francisco Chronicle; paywall)
  2. Farmworkers haven't been the only ones petitioning for additional workplace protections in town recently. Advocates for Healdsburg's iconic herd of fire-abatement goats have long been lobbying for better city rules to protect them — and at Monday's City Council meeting, they got their wish. They city approved a new "grazing policy" at the meeting for animals in town doing the "invaluable service" of munching on flammable vegetation that poses a threat during fire season. City officials say they worked with the contractor providing the goats (which in the past has been Chasin' Goat Grazing from Santa Rosa) to draft the new rules. Among them: "Regular body condition appraisals" of the animals that could lead to the younger and weaker ones getting a break; plenty of access to fresh water and a "comprehensive diet" for the animals, including any "necessary nutrient supplements."; and "humane handling and transportation practices to minimize stress on the animals." In addition, according to Healdsburg's fire marshal: "We want to make sure that the animals are protected from predators as much as possible. It's challenging in our hills, we have bobcats and coyotes. The grazing contractors utilize dogs to protect the animals, and we want to make sure that the public is aware, there's lots of signs, keeping them away from electrified fences." The new rules will reportedly be enforced by the Healdsburg Fire Department and North Bay Animal Services. You can watch city officials discuss and approve our new fire-goat policy in a video of their meeting on the city website, starting around the 35-minute-30-second mark. 3. The results are in for the winning floats in the FFA parade a couple of weekends ago! Here they are, courtesy of the Healdsburg Tribune: "Elsie Allen High School and Cesar Chavez Language Academy bands shared the sweepstakes award for their combined parade entry, and won best band float as well. Other parade float winners included Fincher Auto Service (best commercial float), Girl Scout Troops 10278 and 10331 (youth non-profit) and Healdsburg Forever (adult non-profit). Of the car and truck participants, winners included Patin Vineyard Management (antique and classic), Kingsborough Atlas Tree Surgery (specialty vehicle), C & G Landscape and Noble Goat Farm (commercial) and Comite Pochtlan (novelty costume). Best mounted group was Cabalgata Rio Lago." The Tribune also reports that the auction at the fair afterward brought in more than $810,000 for local FFA and 4H students. Of that, "the scholarship total came to $28,000 awarded... the Barrel Auction brought in $3,200, and the Cake Auction scored a total of $11,640 for the 51 cakes entered. The scholarship cake alone earned $325." Susie Garcia, co-treasurer of the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair, tells the Trib she credits these "impressive totals" to “tremendous support from an amazing community for our long lived traditional HFFCF.” (Healdsburg Tribune)

Healdsburg pics of the day:

Healdsburg resident Ingrid Maltrud shared this pic of the new breakfast fare available at the Fogbelt Station beer garden on Hudson Street. "Me and my friend Lois did the walking path and shared breakfast at the new Fogbelt breakfast offering," she says. "Coffee was great, yummy breakfast sandwich, friendly staff, comfortable outdoor seating even in the cool of the morning! We need more breakfast spots in town! Encouraging all Healdsburgians to get up, go for a walk with a friend and enjoy a sit down at Fogbelt! And yes, you can get a beer for breakfast if you need it - which after graduation this weekend some of us might need! Go Healdsburg Hounds class of 2023!" (Photo courtesy of Ingrid Maltrud)
