- The giant public park gifted to the City of Healdsburg by developers of the Montage resort — our consolation prize for living next to a veritable tourism empire — can now start being built out, according to the Healdsburg Tribune. This, after city officials gave one last "slice of vineyard" on the land back to the Montage around six weeks ago, which the hotel wants "to landscape as an entrance to their luxury resort" — thus sealing the deal once and for all. "The transfer marks an end point for a lengthy and controversial process that is changing the character of Healdsburg, once a busy — if modest — agricultural community on the Russian River, now a tourism destination for fine wine, haute cuisine and luxury accommodation," the Tribune reports. More from the story: "The park, called Saggio Hills for the time being, will convert 38 acres of grassland into a full-service city park with a trails network, off-leash dog play area, community recreation features and a sports field including basketball courts and at least one, possibly two, baseball diamonds. A bandstand, community garden and pump track are also in the park’s proposed master plan. Barbieri Brothers Park, a 3.5-acre community park at Bridle Path and Spur Ridge Lane, will be incorporated into the larger park plan." And next door, city officials are working with a Bay Area developer to build an 118-unit affordable housing project on 14 acres "at the easternmost end of Parkland Farms Boulevard, adjacent to the Healdsburg Ridge Open Space," according to the Trib. Construction on the apartment complex will reportedly begin next year, with a target completion date sometime in 2025. (Healdsburg Tribune & City of Healdsburg & Nextdoor & Nextdoor)
- Two new businesses just moved into the little shopping inlet at 437 and 439 Healdsburg Ave., across from the alleyway that leads over to CVS, according to the Shop Local Healdsburg blog and social media account. One is a chic-looking boutique called "a/muse" filled with home goods and other knick-knacks, and the other is an art gallery called the Rena Charles Gallery. Both are located right next to Alma's Oilcloth & Chucherias, another wonderful downtown boutique full of Mexican decorations and delights. Shop Local writes: "A 'cheeky home decor & gifts' shop opened last weekend between [Alma's] and the just opened on 6/3 Rena Charles Gallery. Owner Dany Arras walks us through her showroom, where she’s sourced from a range of local artisans and vintage finds... she’s wild about antiquing from Sonoma County. Popular top sellers are the lacquered candles, handmade cards with paper prints from India, and bath towels." The gallery next door looks like it's hosting lots of local landscape paintings and photos at the outset. And you can click through to Shop Local for a video tour of the new boutique. From my notebook:
- Looks like there's now a shuttle that runs between Sonoma County Airport and the nearest SMART train station on Airport Boulevard. Which will be extra cool if the train track ever gets extended to Windsor and Healdsburg, as planned... (Sonoma County Airport via Facebook)
- Another cool thing I learned recently: Healdsburg food justice Farm to Pantry has set up a farm stand behind the new L&M Village homeless shelter. It's located on Exchange Avenue at the south end of town, and they're calling it the "Farmacy." Organizers say it's "stocked frequently by L&M participants and staff" with produce such as "lettuce, cabbage, onions, tomatoes, and more" from the gardens at L&M — which were set up by another local nonprofit called Farm To Fight Hunger. (Reach for Home via Facebook)
- There was a magnitude-4.5 earthquake reported around 13 miles northeast of Healdsburg in the wee hours Saturday morning. Anyone feel it? (KGO-TV)
