Here are the top 3 stories in Healdsburg today:
- A new "wine bar and bottle shop" called Maison, the brainchild of three former staffers at the Michelin-starred SingleThread restaurant in town, is opening this Friday at 210 Healdsburg Ave., according to the San Francisco Chronicle. It's located two doors down from the (also new) Lo & Behold cocktail bar near the roundabout. At the outset, Maison will be focusing on serving "wines from coastal California regions, like the Sonoma Coast, Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara... alongside cheese, charcuterie, caviar and tinned fish," the Chronicle reports — and the wine bar owners say on their website that "our unhealthy obsession for Champagne will also be on full display." More from the Chronicle: "While wine tasting rooms dominate the Healdsburg Plaza, a wine bar has been noticeably absent since the 2018 closure of Bergamot Alley. 'We really felt like that late-night, wine-focused vibe was missing and it was something we personally wanted to exist in town,' said Maison co-owner Evan Hufford. (In a rarity for the area, the new establishment will stay open until 2 a.m.) ... Maison will also sell craft saké, coffee, tea and beer, and plans to host educational events, like seminars and blind tastings. Bottles can be taken to-go from a temperature-controlled cellar in the back. 'I want people, especially locally, to feel like this is an appropriate place to (find a wine) to take home for dinner,' said Hufford, who sees Maison as 'a destination for folks wanting to learn more about the world of wine.'” Maison will be open from 2 p.m. through 2 a.m. every day except Wednesday and Thursday. - Last night was the season-opening game at Rec Park for the Healdsburg Prune Packers baseball team, our local champions in California's collegiate summer league. Spoiler alert — they won! The collegiate league is basically a warmup ground for the major leagues, and a place for college players to stay sharp in the off-season. Healdsburg Mayor Ariel Kelley was reportedly in attendance last night to throw the "ceremonial first pitch" for the game — something that Sen. Mike McGuire has done in seasons past. Looked like a rowdy good time. The folks from Healdsburg Running Company uploaded a video to Instagram of the packed green stands at Rec, with everyone singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." The Press Democrat posted a bunch of footage too, and wrote in their recap of the exciting night: "Summer baseball is finally here. One of Sonoma County’s most storied pastimes returned to Recreation Park in Healdsburg on Tuesday with opening day of the California Collegiate League and the Prune Packers’ first game. The gates were open, with the smell of burgers and hot dogs wafting through the air courtesy of The Wurst, set up right in front of the main gates. To top it all off, the Healdsburg Prune Packers got their 2023 campaign underway with a win, beating the Game Day Prep Trojans 6-5 in thrilling fashion." You can find a full play-by-play of the game in the PD. And if you're feeling some FOMO, never fear: The Packers will play more home games for the next four nights at 6 p.m., and another on Sunday at noon. - Hopeful weed shop owners looking to snatch one of Healdsburg's two new open slots for cannabis dispensaries here in town can start submitting their applications for a license next week, on June 15, according to the Press Democrat. Jeff Kay, our city manager, reportedly said at the City Council meeting on Monday that "the application window will be open for 45 days and will be followed by a 'rigorous' evaluation period." Here's some more info from the PD on the approval process and next steps: "City staff will first determine the applicants’ eligibility with a pass-fail assessment, followed by an evaluation and then applicant interviews. After an applicant successfully passes those steps, they will meet with City Council for a public hearing later this year for the final decision. The new dispensaries will be subject to a voter-approved city business tax created specifically for cannabis businesses. Called Measure M, the referendum was approved this past November. Since then, City Council ended Healdsburg’s moratorium on cannabis dispensaries in March and unrolled its cannabis business tax rates in May. Commercial grows will not be allowed, although Healdsburg residents can legally grow up to six marijuana plants indoors or up to three outdoor plants for medical use." (Press Democrat; paywall)
