Here are the top three stories in Healdsburg today:
- A 40-year-old man, Jeffrey Farinha, was shot and killed in the drive-thru of a Jack in the Box in nearby Santa Rosa during an altercation with two men, at least one of whom shot him repeatedly with a handgun. The incident occurred in the 2700 block of Santa Rosa Avenue, and the suspects, who were wearing ski masks, fled the scene and were last seen running in the 200 block of Burt Street. Detectives are seeking any private video footage that may have captured the suspects, and a reward of up to $2,500 is offered for information leading to their arrest. (Rohnert Park-Cotati Patch)
- The Mexican American Vintner's La Cosecha grand tasting will take place from 6:00-9:00 p.m. on Aug. 19 at Aldina Vineyards. The event promises a night of wine tasting from Sonoma and Napa wineries, including Ceja Vineyards, Robledo Family Winery, and Reynoso Family Vineyards, paired with Oaxacan delicacies from chef Octavio Diaz of Healdsburg's Agave restaurant. The evening will also feature a showcase of paper-mâché art by acclaimed artist Ricardo Soltero, displaying Catrinas and mythical animal-like alebrijes. (Subscription: The Press Democrat)
- Healdsburg City Council member Chris Herrod has raised the question of whether the success of local industries relies on the poverty of essential workers, particularly regional farm workers. However, he notes, recent legal victories and the labor movement's new momentum are bringing workers and their allies together to negotiate for better rights and working conditions.
