City to Place Rules on Parking RVs

The Hermosa Beach City Council decides to pursue placing restrictions on parking oversized vehicles around town.

The Hermosa Beach City Council night decided to place restrictions on how long oversized vehicles can park on local roadways and who can park them.

“We’ve got a lot of complaints from residents about parking,” said Hermosa Beach Police Chief Greg Savelli about reports of oversized vehicles, such as RVs, crowding streets.

The council unanimously agreed to approve an ordinance that would require residents to purchase permits for the parking of oversized vehicles within city limits for up to 72 hours.

Guests also would need such permits.

Mayor Howard Fishman asked Savelli what would happen to visitors driving RVs who might not be the guests of a resident and, as a result, not have access to a permit.

They would be cited if they parked the vehicle without the proper authorization, Savelli said.

The city measured oversized vehicles as being more than 20 feet in length, seven feet in width or eight feet in height—oversized vehicles do not include pickup trucks or SUVs, which are less than 25 feet in length and 82 inches in height.

Residents would be limited to purchasing a maximum of 32 permits a year, and no more than 10 of those permits can be for guests. The permits have been proposed to cost between $40 and $80.

These permits “will reduce the amount of time a resident may park an oversized vehicle and free up the limited supply of on-street parking spaces in the city,” according to city staffers (see accompanying city staff report under photo.)

Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach both recently implemented similar measures for the parking of oversized vehicles in their cities.

“We took what we thought fit our community best. And in some areas, ours is more lenient than theirs,” Savelli told the council.

A start date for the proposed parking provisions has not yet been confirmed.
