Comments of the Week: Tanning and Tour

Hermosa Beach Patch readers weighed in on a proposed bill to ban minors from using indoor tanning beds, and the upcoming Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series.

Hermosa Beach teenagers under age 18 could be prohibited from using indoor tanning beds if a proposed bill passes into law. And, a new pro beach volleyball tour is scheduled to come to town in September.

Here are some reader comments we received this week in response to those stories.

A bill authored by Sen. Ted Lieu has been approved by two California Assembly policy committees and now is on its way to the state Appropriations Committee. One Patch reader commented on statistics that Lieu has cited in support of the measure.

"'Studies have shown that people who use tanning beds before age 35 increase their lifetime risk of melanoma by 75 percent,' Lieu said. Wow what an ignorant comment. So let's make sure we have this right studies have shown that 'people' (What people? All people? Skin type1, Skin type2, Skin type3 Skin type4, Skin type5, & Skin type6) Well considering state Sen. Ted Lieu is making an ignorant claim let's get it right. That study is fact only in Skin type1 as you go up in skin type the risks drop off significantly. So it's like if you did a study on five blind 16 year olds and five 20/20 vision 16 year olds on a driving test. All five of the blind 16 year olds failed the test. Then the state of California tried to pass a bill that is you can't get your driver's license till you're 18 because studies have shown that 16 year olds are 50 percent more likely to fail before the age of 18." — wrote .
