Huey Claims Gin's Endorsement; Gin Calls Tweet a 'Mistake'

A tweet from the account of Torrance businessman Craig Huey announced Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin endorsed him for Congress. Gin says he didn't.

Contrary to a tweet sent Thursday morning from businessman 's official Twitter account, Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin has not endorsed Huey in the 36th Congressional District .

The offending tweet was deleted at about 5:45 p.m. Thursday.

The tweet thanked Gin, a Republican who received about 8 percent of the vote in the primary, for endorsing Huey on Wednesday (see accompanying photo.)

"It was a mistake," said Gin, when asked for comment. He later told Patch that he and Huey "haven't even talked" about an endorsement.

Gin has not decided whether he will endorse a candidate, said his campaign manager Charles Moran.

The tweet stemmed from events at a "unity breakfast" hosted by the Los Angeles County Republican Party, said Jimmy Camp, Huey's campaign manager.

Officials asked attendees if they would support Huey in his Congressional run, Camp said, and Moran gave the impression that Gin would.

And, at a previous meeting for the California Republican Party, Camp added, Gin said that he would stand behind any Republican who made it into the runoff, Camp told Patch.

Huey did pick up at least one endorsement—Redondo Beach City Attorney Mike Webb endorsed Huey in a message on his campaign website. Webb ran as a Republican in the primary election.

Huey, who lives outside of the district in Rolling Hills Estates, will face Janice Hahn in the July 12 runoff election to fill former Rep. Jane Harman's vacated Congressional seat.
