Mira Costa Mustangs Advance to CIF Semifinals

A young varsity football squad will take on No. 2 seed Palos Verdes Friday.

The Mira Costa High School football team has made it to the CIF semifinals after beating North High School 35-21 in the CIF-Southern Section Western Division quarterfinals Friday at home in Waller Stadium.

The Mustangs now take on No. 2 seed Palos Verdes High School Friday in an away game. The contest pits the two against one another in a rematch: The Sea Kings handed the Mustangs one of their only two losses this season 9-7, according to the Easy Reader.

The game means a Bay League team will make it into the championship game. Palos Verdes, the defending Western Division champion, has a nine-game winning streak after beating Pacifica of Oxnard 20-3 last Friday.

“North Torrance fought hard and gave great effort,” Mira Costa head coach Don Morrow told the Beach Reporter.

“Both PV and Redondo have tremendous front fours,” the coach told the Easy Reader. “We’ve gotten better up front but that will be the challenge, to see if we can keep them off Dave (Arredondo) a little bit. When he has time, he’s pretty effective.”
