Feb. 14, 2022
Myra Maravilla, who formerly served as the City of Long Beach’s City Clerk specialist, took office Feb. 9 as the City of Hermosa Beach’s City Clerk.
Prior to joining the City of Hermosa Beach, City Clerk Maravilla had served five years as a City Clerk specialist in Long Beach, where she supported the department’s in-house and consolidated elections, petitions, redistricting efforts, records and voter engagement activities. She also served as the department’s communications liaison and supported the centralized COVID-19 emergency response team.
For more than a decade, she’s been engaged in public service, including working with the Long Beach Community College District, the City of Hawaiian Gardens and ABC Unified School District. She also had served as a Hawaiian Gardens councilmember since 2015 and as mayor in 2018 and 2019. She resigned from her elected role at the close of the City Council meeting Tuesday night to join the City of Hermosa Beach today.
City Manager Suja Lowenthal, who appointed the new City Clerk, said City Clerk Maravilla’s experience in the Long Beach City Clerk’s office and her wide range of public service made her uniquely qualified for the position.
“Myra brings the experience to manage the growing complexities of serving as a City Clerk in the digital era and has the election experience to ensure voters are supported in every election,” City Manager Lowenthal said. “She is enthusiastic and will continue to implement the best practices in the City Clerk’s office.”
City Clerk Maravilla replaces former Hermosa Beach City Clerk Eddie Sarmiento, who took a job as Huntington Park’s City Clerk in November. Interim City Clerk Susan Morrow has been serving as City Clerk since then.
“I’m pleased to be joining the executive team at the City of Hermosa Beach and serving in a role that I’m passionate about,” said City Clerk Maravilla. “Hermosa Beach is a small city, which requires an all-hands-on deck approach. I look forward to working closely with the entire City team and constituents to ensure the City Clerk’s office yields the highest level of accuracy and professionalism in all it does.”
City Clerk Maravilla holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from California State University, Fullerton. She also has a Certified Municipal Clerk designation from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks and other certifications.
