New Hermosa Beach Theater Company Opens with 'The Ladders Play'

The company's main goal is to bring quality theater back to the Hermosa Beach Playhouse.

HERMOSA BEACH, CA -- Life has its ups and downs and what better way to visualize that than with ladders. This weekend, "The Ladder Plays," a series of vignettes with a common theme of a ladder or ladders will use that to explore life's challenges, opens at the Hermosa Beach Playhouse.

The play, written by award-winning playwright, Lisa Soland, will be the first production of the Theatre Lovers Conservatory -- theater for "grownups in Hermosa." Founded by Julie Nunis and Gerry Athas-Vazquez, the company's main goal is to bring quality theater back to the Hermosa Beach Playhouse.

“We’re sending out the rallying cry to all the theater lovers in the South Bay and beyond to support our new venture by coming out to see our first show,” Nunis said.

The Theatre Lovers Conservatory's acronym is TLC for a reason, the pair said. Not only does the company want to bring lesser known works and original plays to the community, it also wants to use any proceeds from the shows to upgrade the playhouse's equipment.

“The goal of the Theatre Lovers Conservatory is bringing more culture to the bubble,” Athas-Vazquez said. “It’s fine to head out to the Westside or LA for shows, but we know we have talented people right here. We thought, wouldn’t it be great to have dinner in Hermosa and then walk up the street to see a great show."
