Monday kicks off National Single Americans Week—yes, there is a week dedicated to the unmarried, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

"National Singles Week" kicks off Monday as it's observed nationwide during the third week in September.

The Buckeye Singles Council in Ohio created the week in the 1980s to celebrate single life, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The ranking said that 47.5 percent of Hermosa Beach's 19,082 residents are single.

About 44.9 percent of unmarried adults in the U.S. were women last year.

About 61 percent of unmarried adults in the U.S. had never been married, 23. 8 percent were divorced, and 14.4 percent were widowed.

About 6.5 million couples in 2009 lived together, and 581,300 of them were same-sex couples.
