Summer Heat Can Take Toll on Cars
The California Highway Patrol offers these tips to take care of your car this summer as local temperatures rise.

As the sun's ultraviolet index levels in the Hermosa Beach area are expected to reach 11 on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service, the high heat can seriously affect vehicles—from their cooling systems to tires.
The index measure indicates what the ultraviolet exposure is expected to be around noon, when . An index level of 10 or greater is classified as "very high."
California Highway Patrol Commissioner Joe Farrow has suggested that motorists have their vehicles checked for maintenance items during the summer heat.

"We want you to have a safe and healthy summer, and enjoy the California sunshine," he said in a statement. "Safety should never take a backseat."

- Cooling System
The radiator should be properly filled with coolant. And if you're driving in high heat, keep a close eye on the temperature gauge. Shut off the air conditioner if the engine heat creeps too high.
- Tires
Make sure all of the vehicle’s tires have plenty of tread and are properly inflated. Extreme heat can take its toll, not only on worn or old tires, but new ones as well.
- Electrical system
Check your lights and battery. Ensure the cables are tight and appropriate fluids are filled to the proper level.
