Walk to School Day to Kick Off

International Walk to School Day takes place Wednesday.

Students across the country will walk to school Wednesday morning, marking international Walk to School Day.

Since 1997, communities nationwide have been celebrating Walk to School Day, according to the organization's website, and the event has even taken off in 40 countries.

The day aims to raise global awareness surrounding physical activity, safety, community bonding, the environment, and reducing traffic congestion.

Locally, some Hermosa Beach students have already walked to school on their own for years without push from an initiative—for example, a walking school bus has formed among students and parents.

As of Tuesday afternoon, 470 Walk to School Day events have been organized in California, according to the Walk to School website, including one at Pennekamp Elementary School in neighboring Manhattan Beach and three at Alta Vista, Jefferson, and Lincoln elementary schools in neighboring Redondo Beach.

There were no listed events in Hermosa Beach—but that doesn't mean Hermosa Beach students won't still be walking.
