Crosswalk Signal Planned for Sunset and Vista

Plans are announced to make the area more pedestrian-friendly after one resident demonstrated the need for a crosswalk by posting a YouTube video in March.

The intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Vista Street has made the list of intersections due to receive crosswalks and paint in the next fiscal year, according to LA Streetsblog.

The announcement last week comes after a local campaign launched in March by Hollywood resident Adam Choit showed some sketchy street-crossing tactics by pedestrians along a four-block stretch of Sunset Boulevard. Businesses on the street include Guitar Center, Sam Ash, El Compadre Restaurant and Aroma Cafe.

Initially, Choit had been in contact with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation regarding the installation of a crosswalk, but a transportation engineer had dismissed the idea, reported Curbed L.A. at the time.

Once the video was out, it caught the eye of Deborah Murphy, the chair of the city's Pedestrian Advisory Committee. She shared it with executive team at the Los Angeles Department of Transportation with a request to re-examine the their decision. It has been viewed nearly 4,500 times.

There were no specifics available on when the crosswalk would be installed.

In response to the decision, Hollywood Unbound community blogger Darryl Ford pointed out on his blog that the decision does not address the community's long term needs and is "a kneejerk reaction designed to deflect any negative attention they've received from Adam's video."

He called Adam's example a timely opportunity for LADOT to take "a comprehensive look at Sunset Boulevard to see what changes can be made to make the entire street - and not just one intersection - safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
