HOLLYWOOD, CA — The 97th Academy Awards went down Sunday night, serving up another glitzy and glamorous evening filled with surprises and poignant moments.

“Anora,” a dramedy about a sex worker’s Cinderella story, won five Oscars, including best picture, best director for Sean Baker, best actress for Mikey Madison, best editing and best original screenplay.

Going into the awards ceremony, “Emilia Pérez,” a musical-crime drama about a ruthless cartel leader gone incognito, had led the field of contenders with an impressive 13 total nominations, including a nod for best picture. In the end, however, the movie only scored two Oscars, one for best original song, the other for best supporting actress for Zoe Saldaña.

Adrien Brody took home the best actor Oscar for his role of a visionary architect in the epic drama “The Brutalist,” besting fellow nominee, “A Complete Unknown” star Timothée Chalamet. The evening marked a second Oscar win for Brody in the same category, having won his first best actor Oscar in 2003 for the war drama “The Pianist.”

Meanwhile, Kieran Culkin won the best supporting actor Oscar for his performance as the descendant of a Holocaust survivor in the dramedy “A Real Pain.”

The 2025 Oscars ceremony got underway one hour earlier than usual with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, as the “Wicked” stars performed a medley of songs from “The Wizard of Oz” and “The Wiz.” Thereafter, Conan O’Brien, hosting the Oscars for the first time, walked on stage after emerging from Demi Moore’s shriveled husk — a gag scene from the body-horror movie, “The Substance.”

All along, Moore was heavily favored to win the best actress Oscar, having won almost every precursor award, but in the end, Madison won the top acting prize in an upset over the iconic Hollywood star.

Ahead of the in memoriam segment, Morgan Freeman paid tribute to Gene Hackman. The late actor won the best actor Oscar for the 1971 action thriller “French Connection” and best supporting actor for the 1993 Western film, “The Unforgiven.”
